La storia del regno ispanico visigoto, dalla sua fondazione a Toledo fino all’invasione musulmana (507-711), passa tra i continui tentativi della monarchia di rafforzare il proprio potere e le forze disgregatrici che la minano progressivamente, anche dall’interno. Il regno di Wamba è paradigmatico a questo proposito. Questo monarca, che regnò dal 672 al 680, salì al trono dopo Recesvinto, morto senza lasciare discendenti. La sua nomina fu l’unica autentica elezione reale. Fu scelto dall’episcopato e dalla nobiltà in modo consensuale, come ordinato dai concili toledani che avrebbero governato il felice sviluppo della monarchia visigoto-cattolica, e non come risultato di un’azione violenta o di un’associazione al trono da parte del re precedente. La cerimonia in cui Wamba ricevette gli oli sacri è la prima unzione regale documentata dai tempi dei re di Israele. Ma non fu l’ultima: nel 751 fu adottata dai re franchi, che la trovarono un modo efficace per legittimare un potere che non poteva vantare diritti di sangue. Nei secoli successivi si diffuse in tutta la cristianità, costituendo uno dei pilastri su cui si basò l’autorità monarchica durante il Medioevo.
