Badania przeprowadzone w zakresie bezpośredniego wykorzystania energii geotermalnej wykazały takie zastosowania, jak szklarnie, pływanie, kąpiele i balneologia, ogrzewanie lub chłodzenie budynków mieszkalnych i zaopatrzenie w ciepłą wodę, akwakultura, suszarnie pyrethrum, zbieranie wody, jak pokazano na diagramie Lindala. W Kenii jako przykłady bezpośredniego wykorzystania energii geotermalnej wskazano suszenie pyrethrum, kwiatów i kondensację pary wodnej do celów pitnych przez rolników w wiosce Eburru oraz szklarnie w Oserian. Ponadto wykonalność suszenia plonów przeprowadzona w październiku 2013 r. przez Amerykańską Agencję ds. Rozwoju Międzynarodowego i geotermię jako jednego z partnerów również stanowi część sprawdzonych sposobów bezpośredniego wykorzystania energii geotermalnej. Jednak wiedza na temat wykorzystania takich zasobów znajduje się w rękach bardzo niewielu osób, które albo odmawiają podzielenia się nią z ogółem społeczeństwa, albo polityka organizacji na to nie pozwala. Dlatego też niniejsze badanie zostało przeprowadzone w celu wsparcia rozpowszechniania wiedzy na temat wykorzystania energii bezpośredniej, zwłaszcza w krajach położonych w obszarze Wielkiej Rift Valley w Afryce.
