Zaburzenia te obejmują trzy obszary nieprawidłowości: upośledzone interakcje społeczne (brak nawiązywania relacji z rówieśnikami, brak kontaktu wzrokowego lub innych niewerbalnych zachowań interaktywnych, brak chęci dzielenia się radością z innymi lub brak reakcji społecznych), zaburzenia komunikacji (opóźnienie lub brak rozwoju języka, stereotypowy język, powtarzanie słów wypowiedzianych przez innych lub brak kreatywnej zabawy) oraz stereotypowe zachowania (nieelastyczność, skupienie się na dziwnych zainteresowaniach, ścisłe przestrzeganie niefunkcjonalnych rutyn lub powtarzalne maniery, takie jak machanie rękami lub uderzanie głową).
