Dlatego też wszelkie wady budowy i funkcji soczewki prowadzą do utraty wzroku. Wady rozwojowe soczewki, a zwłaszcza zaćma, są główną przyczyną ślepoty na całym świecie i odpowiadają za 10% wszystkich przypadków ślepoty u dzieci. Niedowidzenie to każdy przewlekły stan wzroku, którego nie można skorygować za pomocą okularów lub soczewek kontaktowych i który z każdym dniem pogarsza się. Nieprawidłowości w soczewce, siatkówce lub innej części układu wzrokowego prowadzą do niedowidzenia. Przeprowadzono retrospektywne badanie analityczne wszystkich przypadków wrodzonej zaćmy z Lahore, które zostały zdiagnozowane podczas konsultacji okulistycznych w Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust. Celem tych badań było określenie czynników środowiskowych i genetycznych powodujących zaćmę wrodzoną.
