«Em saúde humana a poluição do ar é um fator de risco para doença cardiovascular e AVC, infeções respiratórias, DPOC (doença pulmonar obstrutiva crónica), cancro do pulmão, existindo evidência crescente de que aumenta o risco para doenças mentais, nomeadamente depressão. Causa anual-mente cerca de sete milhões de mortes, e uma redução da esperança de vida de 2,9 anos. A reação individual à poluição depende do tipo de poluente a que se está exposto, da intensidade dessa exposi-ção, do estado de saúde e da predisposição genética. As perdas de produtividade e da qualidade de vida também são enormes.Sabe-se desde há muitos anos que a prestação dos cuidados de saúde é responsável por uma parcela desta poluição, mas em Portugal este facto tem sido quase ignorado. Decidi escrever este livro com a pretensão de disseminar no setor da saúde do meu país o conhecimento desta «doença» incompreensivelmente esquecida. Faço-o a pensar em todos quantos trabalham em saúde ou para a saúde, e para todos os que dela necessitam.» 10
