La historia (con minúscula) de las pequeñas localidades corre el riesgo de perderse cuando desaparecen los protagonistas y testigos que vivieron cada uno de los episodios. Solo los hechos muy impactantes originan leyendas con la fuerza suficiente para transmitirse a otras generaciones. La historia se puede contar de diversas maneras, estando la amenidad normalmente reñida con la rigurosidad. Este libro contiene 25 cuentos; son pequeñas narraciones creadas con criterios literarios, historias inventadas pero basadas en un trasfondo real ocurrido en Cheles (Badajoz) que se menciona al comienzo de cada uno. Los cuentos están marcados por la brevedad, buscando suscitar interés con muy pocos párrafos para que en ningún momento decaiga el atractivo de la narración. Fantasía puesta al servicio de la memoria para leer con placer cómo pudieron haber sido diversos sucesos que forjaron una villa. No es casualidad que el río Guadiana esté presente en muchos de los relatos, un río al que los cheleros estuvieron ligados desde que se establecieron en sus orillas. Lo que nunca imaginarían quienes disfrutaron de su cauce y aprovecharon sus recursos durante siglos es que algún día desapareciera transformado en un recuerdo del pasado por obra del mayor embalse de Europa. 10
