Esta historia tiene lugar a principios del siglo XVI; una época en la que el mundo parecía expandirse a un ritmo casi exponencial. Ocurre en Sudamérica, en una tierra conocida como Maya: no es un relato de lo que fue, sino más bien, una historia de lo que podría haber sido si hubiera estado a cargo de aquella época. El personaje principal, Cuauhtémoc, nace en una pequeña aldea del noroeste de Maya: el relato sigue su vida desde el nacimiento, pasando por la escuela de los hombres pájaro, donde aprende a convertirse en un hombre pájaro y a llevar mensajes. El relato se desenvuelve, contando sus aventuras, sus luchas con los asaltantes piratas, así como con algunos de los suyos; y al final del libro tiene doce años y es enviado a la Ciudad de los Emperadores por el Comandante de la guarnición del soldado.
