‘In the form itself, of short texts in lines, I believe absolutely. Despite its serious footprint being for now close to zero, it can never lose its inherent claim, it’s one of the central expressive forms. I will never regret my life-long being stuck in it. I noted many years ago that I had ‘yet to emerge into an area itself submerged …’ – Sebastian Schloessingk (from the preamble to a recent reading).Cry of the No-no is his first substantial emergence and consists largely of work from the last fifteen years. There was, though, an early selection published by Piccolo, This Sloped Land (which the author does not stand by). He has appeared in Verse, Oxford Poetry, Formafluens, Dedalus, Quadrant (several times), and elsewhere. He also wrote the libretto for Magma, an opera by Lamberto Coccioli. And he’s the editor of Qualm, founded in 2003 (which presents previously unpublished poems, and includes contributions from Les Murray, Jamie McKendrick, Peter Reading, Kate Camp ...)Born in Britain, of German and Irish parents, he lives in the Welsh Marches.  Jamie McKendrick: ‘Schloessingk’s poems all have an instantly recognizable and original voice. There’s an appealing subtlety and variety of tone to them, and a syntax that mirrors the twists and turns of a very particular consciousness. They range widely over the material and the material itself is wide-ranging.’ Terese Svoboda: ‘Really, really loved the potatoes.’ Don Paterson: ‘Poems full of terrific things.’ Les Murray (on The Draw): ‘Could be a goer.’ Roc Sandford: ‘Irresistible, consistent, crafty, chancing the rescue.’

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

’I’m saying 'This is not a slam.' Actually, I don’t really know what a slam is. I imagine a mosh pit of vigour and spontaneity. Nothing could be less spontaneous than this reading, and the stuff of it. Which is why, the poetry word having largely migrated to those kinds of scenes where I would shrink booed off into the shadows, I’m offering tonight ... merely texts ... short te...
