This book is intended to present an overview andspecific applications of cross-layeroptimization and cooperative communications inwireless networks. Itconsists of three main thrusts. In the first thrust,a cross-layer design approach is taken tostudy rate control in multi-hop wireless networks. Each flow is treated as a 'leaky-pipe' flow and therate control is explored through effective networkutility maximization (ENUM). The second thrustfocuses on efficient data transport in wirelesssensor networks, where neighboring sensor nodes areorganized into coalitions and cooperativecommunications can be carried out. Energy efficiency, balancing, and probabilistic coverage andconnectivity are investigated in this study. Thethird thrust is on the comparison between MIMO andSISO configurations, where optimal stopping theory isemployed to investigate the optimal neighborselections in multi-channel networks for both antennaconfigurations.
