It is with great pleasure that I write a few lines on this collection of articles entitled Critical Perspectives on the Poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra and Others written by Dr. Chhayakanta Sarangi and Dr. Bijay Kumar Dey, both stalwarts in the field of teaching and delivering speeches, and Dr. Sarangi, in particular, a renowned columnist in Odisha. This collaborative work contains fifteen articles on the poetic oeuvre of Jayanta Mahapatra-the articles almost equally shared by the writers-along with two articles on T. S. Eliot and two on Manoj Das, also shared equally; four other articles on Wordsworth and Madhusudan Rao, on Radhanath, on Mulk Raj Anand and on Rasa theories written by Dr. Sarangi are included as well. The articles are well-written, conveying the writers’ good grasp of the subject in an attractive style. I feel rather enthusiastic to comment on the articles on Jayanta Mahapatra as these are the result of their in-depth studies of Mahapatra’s poetry in relation to the great poet’s personal life and ancestral history, his relationship to his land and its people, his strong moral sense, rendered almost indivisible with the exploitations of the downtrodden in his poetry, and his poetic style. -- Prof. Santwana Haldar
