Criollismo y Patria en la Lima Ilustrada incorpora la primera mitad del siglo XVIII para estudiar las adhesiones y rechazos que encontró la circulación de las ideas ilustradas, en el Virreinato peruano, así como el proyecto político del reformismo borbónico que acompañó la penetración de las luces.A lo largo de la centuria una parte de la élite intelectual criolla abandonaría la loa a las hazañas religiosas y militares del pasado para interesarse por el descubrimiento físico del territorio y el fomento y adelanto de sus potenciales riquezas, más allá de los términos que comprendía la jurisdicción de la ciudad y que hasta el momento había constituido la patria del criollo. El proyecto del Mercurio Peruano (1790-1795) reflejará los cambios operados entre la citada élite limeña y la constitución de una particular República de las Letras que haría inventario del patrimonio humano y material del territorio y comenzaría a reclamar una participación más directa en las riquezas del suelo patrio y una mayor influencia en su administración. 10
