It throws a light on clinical examination and nerve testing. The clinical syndromes associated with the cranial nerves are described in this book. Knowledge of the anatomy of the nervous system (neuroanatomy) is needed by the dental practitioner for several reasons. The nervous system is the most complex, widely investigated and least understood system in the body. Probably the most obvious of these is that a full understanding of the cranial nerves innervating the maxillofacial region is not possible without reference to their connections. This itself demands a wide knowledge of the central nervous system. In addition the practitioner will frequently encounter patients’ suffering from one or other of the many diseases affecting the central and peripheral parts of the nervous system. Satisfactory management of these patients requires some understanding of their illness which in turn requires knowledge of the general structure of the nervous system.
