Nel contesto delle società occidentali industrializzate, possiamo notare l’importanza frenetica e ossessiva data al corpo e alla moda. Entrambi sono intrecciati con gli standard di bellezza diffusi dai media e, allo stesso tempo, dall’industria culturale, che portano a una crescente corsa al consumo di novità estetiche e a un consumo sempre maggiore di immagini propagandate dalla pubblicità, rendendo il corpo un oggetto di mercato. In quest’ottica, l’obiettivo è quello di comprendere lo sviluppo del fenomeno del culto del corpo attraverso un’analisi storica e sociale, mettendo in evidenza lo standard estetico occidentale egemone e le conseguenze del suo raggiungimento. A tal fine, si studierà il cinquantaquattresimo volume di luglio/agosto 2001 della rivista dell’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura (UNESCO), intitolato El Correo de la UNESCO, il cui tema centrale riguarda le modificazioni del corpo in epoca contemporanea. Questo numero dimostra l’interesse internazionale per l’argomento, che dovrebbe quindi essere studiato nel campo delle relazioni internazionali.
