Convencionalmente, os robôs controlados sem fios utilizam circuitos RF, que têm as desvantagens de alcance de funcionamento limitado, gama de frequências limitada e controlo limitado. A utilização de um telemóvel para o controlo de robótica pode superar estas limitações. Ele oferece as vantagens de um controlo robusto, alcance de funcionamento tão grande quanto a área de cobertura do provedor de serviços (alcance em todo o mundo) e nenhuma interferência com outros controladores. O 'Carro robótico sem fio controlado por DTMF' é capaz de receber um conjunto de comandos (instruções) na forma de tons DTMF e executar as ações necessárias, como esquerda, direita, para trás, para frente, etc. Aqui, DTMF significa 'Dual tone multiple frequency' (frequência múltipla de tom duplo). Usaremos um modem/celular dedicado no módulo receptor, ou seja, no próprio robô, e enviaremos os comandos usando tons DTMF de acordo com as ações necessárias. Podemos controlar o carro robótico por meio do software C-code através do chip gerador de tons DTMF. Ele também é chamado de 'Carro Robótico Programável'. Isso porque a gravação e reprodução de tons DTMF permitem controlar o carro robótico automaticamente.
