Constance a vingt-deux ans lorsqu’elle epouse Etienne de Luys a Tours en 1951. Elle est etudiante, algeroise, d’humble origine. Etienne est auditeur a la Cour des comptes, petit-fils du duc de La Convoyere et bientot depute de la IV Republique, mais le conte de fees s’arrete ici. Constance a du caractere, son epoux en manque. En outre et comme on dit pudiquement, il ne sait plus tres bien 'ou il en est' avec les femmes. Pour comble d’infortune il est afflige d’un pere veuf, medecin, chatelain, dont la stature l’ecrase. Or, Constance a toujours regrette que le sien n’en possede aucune. Comme son mari, pour des raisons inavouables, la delaisse bientot tout a fait, elle s’eprend de son beau-pere: amour d’abord prudent et clandestin, mais qui finit au grand jour. Ils auront meme un fils ensemble. Roman de moeurs, parfois de mauvaises moeurs, roman d’amour, mais d’un amour tres singulier, ce livre s’acheve, apres trente ans de diners en ville, de coups durs, de coups bas, mais aussi de bonheur, sur une evidence imprevue; Constance, femme de tete, froide, ambitieuse, a finalement renonce a tout et vecu ce pour quoi ell semblait le moins faite: une passion.
