La chirurgia orale e maxillo-facciale pediatrica è unica tra le specialità chirurgiche in quanto è strettamente correlata all’odontoiatria. Esiste infatti una relazione diretta, poiché una conoscenza approfondita dell’odontoiatria è un prerequisito per una specialità chirurgica che si occupa di malattie, lesioni e difetti della regione orale e maxillo-facciale. La gestione dei bambini che devono sottoporsi a procedure oro-chirurgiche si basa su (1) età e maturità, (2) esperienze mediche e dentistiche passate che potrebbero influenzare il comportamento, (3) stato fisico e (4) durata e quantità di manipolazioni necessarie per eseguire l’intervento.
