O edentulismo, ou perda de dentes, tem consequências profundas que vão para além da saúde oral, afectando o bem-estar físico, emocional e social. Altera a aparência facial, reduz a autoestima e causa desnutrição, dificuldades na fala e distúrbios da ATM. A nível psicológico, a perda de dentes conduz ao isolamento social, ao embaraço, à ansiedade e à depressão. A nível sistémico, está associada à desnutrição, doenças cardiovasculares, diabetes e infecções respiratórias. Do ponto de vista funcional, a perda de dentes prejudica a seleção de alimentos, o paladar e a função oral, enquanto do ponto de vista económico, acarreta custos acrescidos de cuidados de saúde e perda de produtividade. Os cuidados dentários imediatos e o tratamento protético podem atenuar estas consequências, restaurar a função oral, melhorar a estética e aumentar a qualidade de vida, o que realça a importância da intervenção precoce.
