Los abusadores sexuales tienen diferentes facetas y son difíciles de identificar, por lo que pasan desapercibidos, hasta que por alguna circunstancia cometen abusos o crímenes contra menores y son evidenciados, mientras que otros permanecen en la clandestinidad y se encuentran en cualquier ambiente social. Corresponde a individuos que pueden ser figuras públicas, desde políticos, financieros, deportistas, cantantes etc, que cuando son desenmascarados mucho tiempo después de cometer los delitos, su reacción es negar cualquier acción que los comprometa y ponga en riesgo su estabilidad laboral y posición social. No hay manera de saber si a partir de la conducta social, una persona es o no un abusador sexual ya que actúan disimuladamente en el entorno familiar y social, sin embargo, las estadísticas indican que la mayor parte de los abusadores son varones heterosexuales.Se presentan como personas afectuosas y humanitarias hacia sus congéneres, mientras que la relación que establecen con los menores abusados sexualmente está basada en amenazas, intimidación y control.
