L’interface implant-pilier détermine la stabilité latérale et rotationnelle du joint implant-pilier, qui à son tour détermine la stabilité prothétique de la restauration implanto-portée. Les IAC ont progressé depuis les premières connexions hexagonales externes jusqu’aux connexions internes plus avancées qui dominent le marché aujourd’hui, mais il n’y a pas de preuve solide indiquant un seul type de connexion optimal. L’hexagone externe est indiqué pour la restauration de plusieurs unités. En revanche, l’hexagone interne et le cône morse sont plus favorables aux restaurations unitaires et aux régions esthétiques. Le concept de commutation de plate-forme est adapté à un espace prothétique réduit (mésiodistal) pour préserver l’os crestal et les papilles interdentaires.
