I metalli pesanti sono presenti in abbondanza nelle fonti idriche a causa del rapido sviluppo industriale e agricolo, insieme alla crescita demografica. I metalli provenienti dai corpi idrici inquinati possono quindi penetrare nel suolo circostante, nelle acque superficiali e nelle acque sotterranee. Quando l’acqua inquinata viene consumata dagli organismi viventi, i metalli pesanti tossici possono accumularsi e causare danni. È importante rimuovere i metalli pesanti dalle fonti industriali prima che entrino nell’ambiente. I processi di trattamento convenzionali per la rimozione dei metalli pesanti sono molto costosi, generano grandi volumi di fanghi chimici e richiedono costi operativi aggiuntivi per lo smaltimento dei fanghi. Il libro tratta dello sviluppo di un assorbente a basso costo per la rimozione efficace dei metalli pesanti dalle acque reflue industriali e della determinazione dell’efficienza di rimozione dei biosorbenti (legno di pino, legno/corteccia di gelso da carta e biochar di lolla di riso) rispetto a quelli disponibili in commercio (polvere di silice) in diverse condizioni sperimentali. Il metodo di preparazione dei biochar e l’efficienza di rimozione dei metalli pesanti dei biochar sono stati descritti in dettaglio.
