Les relations qui se sont développées entre les Oromos de Wollega et les Gumuz dans le passé ont été marquées à la fois par des conflits et une coexistence pacifique. Malgré des interactions socio-économiques fortes, les revendications sur les frontières administratives, la concurrence pour les ressources, les préjugés et les stéréotypes ainsi que les ambitions des élites ont conduit les deux groupes ethniques à entrer en conflit. En conséquence, après 1991, les conflits ont dominé la coexistence des deux groupes ethniques.
