Les conflits entre l’homme et la faune sauvage constituent un problème majeur dans certaines parties du district de Meru depuis les années 1920. Ces conflits se traduisent par des pertes de vies humaines dues aux animaux sauvages, ainsi que par la prédation du bétail et la destruction des récoltes. Les éléphants, les buffles et les singes constituent une menace pour la production agricole dans le district. Les parties du district les plus touchées par les conflits sont celles qui entourent la forêt du Mont Kenya, les forêts d’Imenti, la forêt de Ngaya et le parc national de Meru. Les autres zones touchées sont celles qui entourent les collines de Tharaka. Ce travail, basé sur une étude réalisée en 2009, décrit les problèmes liés à ces conflits dans le district. L’étude s’est principalement concentrée sur les archives et les sources orales.
