Ad esempio, il romanzo cyberpunk Neuromante (1984) di William Gibson mostra come i temi, i registri e gli elementi narrativi del romanzo fossero fortemente legati alle alte tecnologie. Tuttavia, ciò che si credeva fantascienza si è rivelato un fatto scientifico; gli individui contemporanei sono diventati 'postumani' a causa dei progressi rivoluzionari dell’alta tecnologia. Rispecchiando l’attuale stile di vita dell’uomo, Cosmopolis, un romanzo (2003) scritto da Don DeLillo, è il secondo caso di studio che sottolinea la misura in cui le nuove tecnologie hanno conlonizzato il genere del romanzo. Per analizzare ulteriormente il cambiamento di formato, il modo in cui il genere narrativo è stato trasferito ai lettori digitali e le forme che ha assunto rispetto allo stile convenzionale stampato, afternoon, a story (1987) di Michael Joyce e la narrativa interattiva incarnata in Zork I (1977) di Lebling et al. sono altri casi di studio. Infine, questa ricerca esplora il modo in cui i romanzi computerizzati, siano essi testi stampati o digitalizzati, fiction interattive o ipertestuali, hanno portato le teorie narrative postmoderne nel mezzo elettronico.
