Landscape design is a specialized and evolving discipline within the broader practice of landscape architecture that focuses on the creative and technical planning of outdoor spaces to achieve harmony between nature, built environments, and human activity. It encompasses a wide range of projects including public parks, urban plazas, private gardens, institutional grounds, and recreational areas, each requiring a deep understanding of both ecological systems and design principles. At the heart of landscape design is the goal to shape spaces that are functional, sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and responsive to both environmental conditions and human needs. One of the most influential and personal expressions within landscape design is garden design, which deals specifically with the planning and composition of smaller-scale outdoor areas, such as residential gardens, courtyards, terraces, and estate landscapes. Garden design is often seen as a subset of landscape design, yet it holds its own history, vocabulary, and significance, rooted in centuries of horticultural artistry and cultural symbolism-from classical Persian and Japanese gardens to modern ecological and minimalist garden styles. In both garden and broader landscape design, the process typically begins with an in-depth site analysis that examines topography, soil conditions, drainage patterns, sunlight exposure, climate, wind direction, and existing vegetation. This is followed by a clear understanding of the client’s preferences, intended uses of the space, budget, and long-term maintenance goals. Design principles such as balance, unity, rhythm, focalization, scale, and contrast are applied to organize space, choose forms, and guide visual flow. In garden design, these principles are particularly vital, as the scale is more intimate and every element-from plant species to paving materials-must contribute to a cohesive and engaging spatial experience. Plant selection is one of the most critical components, demanding a solid foundation in horticulture.
