I prodotti naturali sono stati storicamente una ricca fonte di 'composti guida' per la scoperta di farmaci. Sebbene iniziata solo cinquant’anni fa, la ricerca sugli organismi marini volta alla scoperta di nuovi composti biologicamente attivi ha ormai acquisito un ruolo riconosciuto in questo tipo di studi. Il mio lavoro di ricerca, svolto nell’ambito del programma del libro, si è concentrato su questo campo di ricerca e, in particolare, sull’isolamento e l’identificazione dei costituenti bioattivi dei coralli molli marini egiziani. Questa ricerca ha portato all’isolamento di sei nuovi composti, appartenenti a diverse classi strutturali, alcuni dei quali possiedono un’interessante attività antitumorale. Le strutture di tutti i nuovi composti sono state chiarite utilizzando moderni metodi spettroscopici, tra cui NMR 1D, 2D, raggi X e FAB-MS. Parte prima: Sarcophyton glaucum L’analisi chimica delle frazioni meno polari dell’estratto organico ottenuto da Sarcophyton glaucum ha permesso di ottenere tre nuovi composti (1-3). Parte seconda: Sarcophyton Trocheliophorum. Lo studio chimico del corallo molle ha portato all’isolamento di sei cembranoidi, due dei quali sono nuovi, Trochelioid A (1) e B (2), e uno, 16-oxosarcophytonin E(3).
