A comunicação é o processo de transmissão de informação e significado de um indivíduo ou organização para outro através de símbolos mutuamente compreensíveis. O elemento crucial é o significado. A comunicação tem como objetivo central a transmissão de significado. O processo de comunicação só é bem sucedido quando o recetor compreende uma ideia tal como o emissor a pretendia. Ambas as partes devem concordar não só com a informação transmitida, mas também com o significado dessa informação.Para transmitir uma ideia, temos de utilizar símbolos (palavras, sinais, imagens, sons) que representam a ideia. Os símbolos devem ser compreendidos pela pessoa ou pessoas com quem pretendemos comunicar. Ambas as pessoas devem atribuir o mesmo significado aos símbolos utilizados; caso contrário, há uma má comunicação.
