Les performances basées sur des compétences ouvertes peuvent être davantage influencées par l’anxiété et la confiance en soi que celles basées sur des compétences fermées. Une compétence ouverte peut concerner un sport individuel ou d’équipe où l’athlète évolue dans un environnement interactif et en constante évolution (basket-ball, tennis). Une compétence fermée s’exerce dans un environnement plus stable, relativement prévisible et souvent à son propre rythme (par exemple, le golf, la gymnastique, l’aviron). L’anxiété peut avoir un impact différent sur la performance selon ces deux types de compétences, en fonction de la manière dont l’influence de l’environnement et des autres concurrents peut modérer la relation entre l’anxiété et la performance. Les données issues de la littérature sur l’humeur et la performance avant la compétition suggèrent que plus un athlète interagit avec un adversaire, plus les actions ou la performance de ce dernier sont susceptibles d’influencer la relation entre l’humeur et la performance. Étant donné que les contacts avec l’adversaire sont plus nombreux dans les sports à compétences ouvertes, on pourrait donc prédire que l’anxiété aurait un effet plus néfaste sur la performance dans ces sports que dans les sports à compétences fermées, en raison de l’interaction plus importante avec les adversaires et du contrôle moindre sur l’environnement.
