O estudo explorou a forma como os princípios de relações públicas foram utilizados na comunicação da campanha eleitoral da Aliança Democrática (DA) nas eleições sul-africanas de 2014, em comparação com o ANC, o EFF e o Agang. Defendeu que as relações públicas políticas devem ser estratégicas, não se limitando a propaganda ou a manipulação, e devem gerir a comunicação entre os partidos e o público. Recorrendo a um estudo de caso comparativo e a uma análise de conteúdo de 144 artigos do Cape Times, bem como ao manifesto da DA, a investigação concluiu que a comunicação da campanha foi, na sua maioria, reativa em vez de proativa. A DA e o ANC centraram-se mais em atacar ou contrariar os adversários do que em promover as suas próprias questões políticas. A cobertura mediática foi dominada por controvérsias como o caso Nkandla e a fusão fracassada entre a DA e o Agang, o que prejudicou as reputações e tensionou as relações com os eleitores. O estudo conclui que a comunicação política deve ser mais estratégica, dialógica e bidirecional para fortalecer as relações, o envolvimento público e a participação democrática.
