Fortunata y Jacinta es una de las grandes novelas de la literatura universal, una historia de amor apasionado como La Celestina, Romeo y Julieta, La Regenta, Ana Karerina o Madame Bovary, ambientada en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX durante los años que van desde que Juan Santa Cruz conoce a Fortunata hasta que desaparece la relación entre los amantes. Lo singular es la capacidad del novelista para hacernos pasar por las clases sociales urbanas a través de personajes reales de las clases altas, medias y bajas de la ciudad de Madrid en un extraordinario alarde de habilidad narrativa. ¿Cómo se organiza la novela? ¿En qué orden aparecen los personajes? ¿Cuándo y con qué intención? ¿Cómo se establece la relación entre ellos? ¿Cuándo, dónde y qué tipos de mensajes lanza el novelista? A la historia de amor se añaden otras, y también tipos y ambientes que dejan en el lector una sensación única: la de no ser al mismo antes y después de la lectura.
