Advierte de los errores y desorden que, debidos a la inexperiencia, caracterizaron a los primeros intentos oficiales de catalogación, situación que podría resolverse con un uso correcto de las novedades técnicas, siempre que puedan ser diseñadas, implementadas y manejadas apropiadamente. El correcto trabajo de catalogación debe emprenderse a partir de algunas nociones básicas que estén suficientemente claras, en campos que deben tener el aval de los estándares nacionales e internacionales. Este libro da cuenta que gran parte del éxito de la catalogación reside en el rigor en la toma de datos de los elementos físicos, y en cómo se recoge esta información, se clasifica y ordena, por lo que ofrece algunas herramientas iniciales útiles.
