A autora, psicóloga clínica e psicoterapeuta, com mais de 20 anos de experiência a trabalhar com crianças, famílias e adultos na Irlanda, descreve a dolorosa e alegre jornada de partilhar o segredo e como é essa experiência para aqueles que foram abusados sexualmente. Ela destaca a necessidade de partilhar o segredo e de contê-lo, e identifica três dinâmicas-chave que descrevem esse processo: em primeiro lugar, o processo ativo de não contar aos outros e as razões complexas para isso; em segundo lugar, a criação de um efeito panela de pressão, em que fatores intrapessoais e interpessoais levam à necessidade de contar; e, finalmente, como o segredo é confiado em vez de contado e a necessidade de contenção contínua à medida que o indivíduo partilha o segredo em diferentes relações ao longo da vida.
