This collection of linked tanka between two Australian and two American poets reminds us how exciting it is to colour outside the lines. Unexpected responses enliven the series as poets from different hemispheres move through the four seasons. For example, Fielden’s final lines in ‘Hope Springs Eternal’, ‘to swim without a wet suit / weightless meditation’, is countered with Whitman's startling ‘a gap opens…rip tide/time to renew marriage vows’. In ‘Sunlight Between Dark Pools’, Jacobson’s charming ‘Bogong moth/fluttering on the floor/beside me… / we move together / when the music starts’, is rejoined by Nakano’s humorous ‘quite a plain girl / wearing muted colours / they dance all night / as I watch, wondering / what's she got that I haven’t?’ Playful, revelatory, hopeful and nostalgic, the tanka in Colouring In remind us of what it is like to be human. - Margaret Chula, President, Tanka Society of America Colouring In is a collection of responsive tanka that comes alive as we journey through the seasons in the hands of four accomplished poets: two from Australia, Amelia Fielden and Gerry Jacobson; and two from the USA, Genie Nakano and Neal Whitman. Their four voices remain distinct while these poets link and shift, exploring spring, summer, autumn and winter in separate chapters. Each season is given a colour, following the Japanese tradition, as explained by Sonja Arntzen in her interesting introduction. This collection, composed by international friends writing together, is so much more than a series of responsive tanka on a theme. Reading through it, we can share both glimpses of the authors’ lives, and the rhythms of their changing inner and outer landscapes. They daub from a palette of unfolding emotions and experiences to paint superbly crafted and memorable canvases for us to enjoy. - Marilyn Humbert, leader of the Bottlebrush Tanka Group, Australia 3

    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

It was during the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-601) that China first introduced tea to Japan, but the gentle art of tea drinking did not fully take root until the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127-1279) when a Japanese monk called Eisai returned from the Zhejiang Province, bringing with him the seeds for the first plantations and the principles of the Tea Culture. Early mornings, there’s a busy twittering, singing, squawking from all sorts of birds as they start their day. Late at night, I hear the sighing of the surf and thumping of the waves on Coniston Beach in the middle distance, and frogs kero-kero-ing in the garden ponds. In between, are my adagio days. ...

  • Leaves
    Amelia Fielden
The tanka form, in which these short lyrics on nature were composed, is that of traditional Japanese poetry. In classical Japanese, the expression meaning ’leaves’, kotonoha, is a homonym for ’words’. Both are also written identically, in Kanji characters which join ’say’ with ’leaf/leaves’. Kotonoha can also refer to waka, the pre-modern designation for tanka poems. ...

  • These Purple Years
    Amelia Fielden
A long while ago, I heard of an old Japanese tradition which associates the colour purple with the seventies, and endorses it as appropriate for wearing by people in that venerable age group. Then, when I turned seventy, I joined the Red Hat Society, founded in the USA in 1997 as ‘the place where there is fun over fifty’. This society takes for its motto, so to speak, a poem ca...
