The story takes place in the year 2080, after World War III. Angela Thomas, an eleven-year old girl, tells the story of her recent horrific six-week adventure in Similar Township where her family recently relocates to help her step father’s career. The story begins when the Thomas family arrive back to their hometown of Blue Water. They are welcomed by Angela’s grandma who had just finished watching the news whose top story was the events in Similar Township and Angela’s fearless heroism. Angela reminisces about the weeks leading up to their move, including conversations she had with her grandpa about how life was before the onset of World War III in 2023-full of racial injustice and terrorism, which are now considered issues in the distant past. Angela’s step dad Paul has invented a fingerprint system as an identification method opposed to the current card system used globally. Because of the newly elected leader of Similar, Sub-Senior Richards’ controversial history and openness to new ideas, Similar is the perfect town to move to. Angela is furious about moving because she is entering her first year of middle school and leaving her best friends since kindergarten and fears that she may fall in love with a boy she is forbidden to date because in Similar, dating or marrying someone within your same race is forbidden.

Somehow, I found myself going from box to box-whether I stepped in, jumped in, stumbled in or was shoved in, I was there-in darkness, feeling alo...
