Il giornalista, politico e storico francese Alexis de Tocqueville è considerato il fondatore della scienza politica comparata e il primo autore della teoria democratica moderna. Nella sua opera principale sulla teoria dello Stato, 'De la démocratie en Amérique', egli delinea un modello di Stato democratico-repubblicano e di società politica. Nel suo trattato, Christoph M.
