Ce livre teste le résultat proposé par Frederick Burwick et James McKusick et publié par Oxford University Press en 2007, selon lequel Samuel Taylor Coleridge est l’auteur de la traduction anonyme du Faust de Goethe publiée par Thomas Boosey en 1821. L’approche du test des résultats est stylistique. Plus précisément, l’utilisation de mots fonctionnels est choisie comme critère stylistique, et 80 mots fonctionnels sont utilisés pour définir un vecteur de fréquence de mots fonctionnels à 73 dimensions pour chaque texte du corpus des œuvres littéraires de Coleridge et pour une sélection d’œuvres d’une série d’auteurs anglais contemporains. Chaque vecteur de profil est un point dans un espace vectoriel à 80 dimensions, et des méthodes d’analyse de grappes sont utilisées pour déterminer la distribution des vecteurs de profil dans l’espace. Si l’hypothèse testée est valide, le profil de la traduction de 1821 devrait être plus proche dans l’espace des œuvres connues comme étant de Coleridge que des œuvres des autres auteurs. Les résultats de l’analyse en grappes montrent cependant que ce n’est pas le cas, et la conclusion est que le résultat de Burwick et McKusick est falsifié par rapport au critère stylométrique et à la méthodologie analytique utilisés.
