Coffee Tails is a collection of short stories about Hank Paull, retired from the Para-Rescue teams of the United States Air Force. A secretive office of special investigations in the Pentagon, hires him as a private investigator to pursue cases the military can’t. He operates out of a hidden office in the basement of the Smithsonian to distance himself from his military coworkers. Hanks’ assignments range from a sweltering dead-end street in New York City to the long dark corridors of the Pentagon. He is tested to his limits as he transitions from Military life to the seamy world of mystery, murder, and extra-terrestrial technology in the hands of a scheming scientist. These cases take Hank to far-flung places where sometimes the heroes are more fearsome than the villains. Then it’s off to the Caribbean where an assassin tries to become a writer while working for international gangsters, human traffickers, and murderous multi-national developers.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
