Parte primera. Acertijos lígicos; Parte segunda. Los cofres de Porcia y otros misterios; Parte tercera. Cuentos extraordinarios; Parte cuarta. La lógica es una cosa maravillosa.

I’ve always enjoyed Bruce Noll’s poems, but the sweep of Circumference of Light comes as a revelation. I’ve been used to seeing Noll transform into Walt Whitman, both in his Pure Grass performances and often in his poetry as well, but the Whitman influence is less pronounced here (though he makes an appearance late in the book), and the Emily Dickinson-inspired title of the volume signals a new kind of intensity and refraction in many of the poems. The subject matter remains very much Whitmanian, though, from naked bodies to decaying flesh, from brushing a wife’s hair to lacing a girl’s skates, from the muck of ponds to worm- and insect-rich toad shit. Each poem is a Dickinsonian “stairway of surprise” usually emerging from the always surprising and often humorous commonplace, though there’s room for the sublime as well, as poem after poem returns us to the cosmos, black holes, northern lights, gravitational waves. From four-line gems to more extended narratives, aging and death are our inevitable companions, and time and again we come upon a poem of near perfection, like ‘Week Moments,’ which will change forever how you think of a calendar. ‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...
