Nicht einmal den Äußerungen des Autors selbst zum „tragischen Reiseerlebnis' ist eine eindeutige Interpretation zur tieferen Bedeutung und Wirkungsabsicht zu entnehmen. Einige Literaturwissenschaftler sahen in der 1930 erschienenen Novelle ein politisches Pamphlet Manns, während andere ihr aufgrund ihres Inhalts eine exponierte Stellung im Werkkanon Thomas Manns zurechneten und sie nicht so recht mit seinen früheren Erzählungen in Einklang bringen konnten. Konjunkturell und auf-einander Bezug nehmend änderte sich zudem in der späteren Betrachtung von „Mario und der Zauberer' der ihr zugeschriebene politische Gehalt. Ist „Mario und der Zauberer' also letztlich als Faschismus-Parabel zu sehen?
