Erasmus published the Ciceronianus in 1528, in the middle of a long quarrel over how Latin ought to be written. A party of humanists, most of them in Italy, held that no word was good Latin unless Cicero had used it. In the dialogue Nosoponus has spent seven years reading nothing but Cicero; his friends Bulephorus and Hypologus pretend to share his ambition in order to talk him out of it. Erasmus’s verdicts on the Latin writers of his own day offended a good many of them. This edition gives the Latin text with an introduction by Erik Robinson on Erasmus’s life and the Ciceronian controversy, a guide to the humanists Erasmus names, and a short bibliography. This second edition corrects the text against the critical edition and resets it.
