Drafted and decorated combat infantryman, Michael Whalen, is a Vietnam War veteran. Proudly serving his country, Whalen spent many days in Cambodia, even though his unit was promised that would never happen. Friends and family alike encouraged Whalen to write down the good as well as the bad experiences he paid witness to during the war. Writing his book, CHOSEN TO SERVE and sharing his story has helped Whalen recover from the losses of those dear to him. Some, barely out of high school, gave their lives fighting for their country in a faraway land. After the war, Michael returned home to a job of teaching and coaching and is now a retired Elementary Principal and Coach. Alongside his wife, three daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he resides in the small community where he was raised. His spare time consists of summer gardening, bass tournament fishing, and enjoying life.
