Câu chuyện bắt đầu với họa sĩ Vị Ý. Cách đây hơn mười năm, tôi có dịp trò chuyện bút đàm với anh Đinh Thanh Nguyện ở Việt Nam qua trang blog Phay Van - nhân vật chính đã giúp tìm lại tác phẩm 'Cõi Đá Vàng' của nhà văn Nguyễn Thị Thanh Sâm và được nhắc đến trong Thay Lời Mở - 'Hành Trình của Cõi Đá Vàng' khi nhà văn Trần Hoài Thư tái bản tác phẩm này tại Hoa Kỳ. Gọi nhau bằng anh, bằng chị, nhưng tôi đoán biết anh cùng thế hệ với tôi khi anh chịu khó scan những bìa báo Tuổi Hoa, những cuốn sách quý ngày cũ anh còn may mắn giữ được để tặng Phay Van và các bạn trong nhóm. Một lần anh ngỏ ý muốn biết thêm về họa sĩ Vị Ý là thầy dạy vẽ của anh, nghe nói đã sang Mỹ và đã mất... Tôi chia sẻ với họa sĩ Đinh Cường và đề nghị khi nào có thể xin anh viết một bài về người họa sĩ này. Anh Đinh Cường có hứa nhưng rồi anh ngã bệnh và qua đời ngày 7-1-2016. Đến tháng 2 năm đó, tôi may mắn tìm được bài 'Họa sĩ Vị Ý, Ảo Giác và Quên Lãng' của nhà thơ Viên Linh trên Người Việt online (Wednesday, March 13, 2013) và gửi ngay cho anh Đinh Thanh Nguyện xem. Trong nước bị chặn tường lửa nên tôi post bài này trên blog của mình để bạn bè có thể đọc........Mất liên lạc với một người bạn cũ nhưng may mắn kết nối lại được với một người anh. Anh Việt Dương gửi tiếp cho tôi bài viết về Thầy Tuệ Sỹ. Tôi chia sẻ, '... NM rất thích. Vì được chính anh là người đủ duyên để có dịp hạnh ngộ và ở gần hai Thầy Trí Siêu & Tuệ Sỹ trong một thời gian, kể lại... Anh ráng viết tiếp về những người mà anh quen biết và gom lại thành một sách ’chân dung’ sẽ rất hay.' Anh Việt Dương đồng ý, hứa sẽ viết và gửi thêm một số bài khác. Sau đó, từ tình thân văn nghệ, anh đề nghị tôi viết về những chân dung mà tôi quen biết ghép vào phần của anh để thành đồng tác giả 'Chân dung Ngày Đó Bây Giờ'... Đó là duyên khởi của cuốn sách bạn đang cầm trong tay.Trần Thị Nguyệt Mai
