La chitine et son dérivé désacétylé, le chitosane, sont des polymères naturels composés de D-glucosamine (unité désacétylée) et de N-acétyl-D-glucosamine (unité acétylée) répartis indistinctement. La chitine et le chitosane sont utilisés dans les domaines de la biomédecine, de l’alimentation et de l’agriculture. Le succès du chitosane dans chacune de ces applications spécifiques est directement lié à ses propriétés physicochimiques. L’objectif de ce livre est de mettre en évidence la relation entre les propriétés physicochimiques des polymères et leur comportement. Une caractérisation ciblée du chitosane concernant certaines propriétés biologiques et un certain nombre d’applications spécifiques (administration de médicaments, ingénierie tissulaire, pansements, traitement des eaux usées, utilisation agricole et nanoparticules de chitosane) est donnée. Le mécanisme moléculaire des propriétés biologiques telles que la biocompatibilité, la biodégradabilité, l’hydrogel, l’anti-inflammatoire et l’antimicrobien a été mis à jour. Ces propriétés peuvent être encore améliorées par des modifications du chitosane sur son groupe amino primaire. Les modifications peuvent être effectuées par greffage, modifications chimiques et système de mélange de chitosane.
