Chita: A Memory of Last Island is a novel written by Lafcadio Hearn. The story is set in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane that hit Last Island, a resort island off the coast of Louisiana in the late 19th century. The protagonist, a young girl named Chita, is the daughter of a Spanish fisherman and a Cajun mother. Chita is left orphaned after the hurricane and is taken in by a wealthy Creole family who live on the island. The novel explores the themes of race, class, and identity as Chita struggles to find her place in a world that is changing rapidly. She is torn between her Spanish and Cajun heritage, and her desire to fit in with the Creole society that has taken her in. As Chita grows up, she falls in love with a young man named Gaston, who is also struggling with his own identity and place in society. Their love is complicated by the prejudices and social norms of the time, and the novel explores the challenges they face in trying to be together. Overall, Chita: A Memory of Last Island is a poignant and beautifully written novel that captures the spirit of a bygone era. It is a story of love, loss, and the search for identity in a world that is constantly changing. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
