En este libro, los lingüistas Rodolfo Cerrón-Palomino y Enrique Ballón Aguirre recogen por vez primera el léxico chipaya en forma sistemática. Vigente aún en su reducto orureño de Santa Ana de Chipaya (Bolivia), se trata de la última variedad sobreviviente de la familia lingüística uro, históricamente localizada a lo largo del eje acuático Titicaca-Poopó.Considerado en la década de 1930 por Alfred Métraux un idioma en vía de extinción, el chipaya ha logrado revertir tal pronóstico y se mantiene hoy vigoroso gracias a la lealtad idiomática de sus hablantes. Este es, por cierto, un caso sin precedentes en la historia linguocultural del mundo andino. Luego de situar la lengua dentro de su contexto histórico-cultural y de enunciar los postulados teóricos léxico-semánticos que subyacen a la presentación del material recogido y estudiado, el Léxico está organizado en dos secciones: la primera formada por la ringla chipaya-castellano/castellano-chipaya y la segunda por la Etnotaxonomía, que ofrece su organización semántica en forma de parangón general del universo léxico. 10
