Selon ses partisans, la stabilité mondiale, l’épanouissement de l’humanité et l’avenir du capitalisme démocratique libéral dépendaient de l’expansion de l’influence de la nation. Alors que les États-Unis ont toujours été prudents quant à leur implication dans les affaires extra-hémisphériques, leur présence est devenue de plus en plus visible dans le monde entier au cours du vingtième siècle. Pour soutenir cette stratégie, les Américains ont construit ce que l’historien Daniel Immerwahr a décrit comme un 'empire pointilliste'. Contrairement aux empires traditionnels qui s’appuyaient sur la conquête et l’occupation directes de vastes territoires, les États-Unis ont construit un vaste réseau de bases militaires à travers le monde pour projeter leur puissance. Ces avant-postes servaient de points d’appui pour les interventions militaires, renforçaient un système économique mondial favorisant les élites capitalistes et positionnaient les États-Unis comme une force dominante face à tout rival - démocratique ou autre - qui remettait en cause leur hégémonie.
