De acordo com os seus proponentes, a estabilidade global, o florescimento humano e o futuro do capitalismo democrático liberal dependiam da expansão da influência da nação. Apesar de os Estados Unidos terem sido historicamente cautelosos quanto ao envolvimento em assuntos extra-hemisféricos, no século XX a sua presença tornou-se cada vez mais visível em todo o mundo. Para apoiar essa estratégia, os americanos construíram o que o historiador Daniel Immerwahr descreveu como um 'império pontilhista'. Ao contrário dos impérios tradicionais que se baseavam na conquista e ocupação direta de vastos territórios, os Estados Unidos construíram uma extensa rede de bases militares em todo o mundo para projetar poder. Estes postos avançados serviram de palco para intervenções militares, reforçaram um sistema económico global que favorece as elites capitalistas e posicionaram os EUA como uma força dominante contra qualquer rival - democrático ou não - que desafiasse a sua hegemonia.
