Chimneysmoke is a novel by Christopher Morley that tells the story of a young man named Gissing who moves to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. Gissing soon finds himself struggling to make ends meet and he takes a job as a secretary for a wealthy businessman named T. Pinkerton Plunkett. As Gissing becomes more involved in the world of Plunkett and his socialite friends, he begins to question his own values and desires.The novel explores themes of love, ambition, and the corrupting influence of wealth and power. Through Gissing’s experiences, the reader is taken on a journey through the world of early 20th century New York City, including its vibrant literary and artistic scene, as well as its darker underbelly of greed and corruption.Chimneysmoke is a witty and insightful novel that provides a vivid portrait of a bygone era. Morley’s writing is characterized by his sharp observations and clever wordplay, making the book an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.1917. Morley, American editor, author and Rhodes scholar, was one of the founders of the Saturday Review of Literature, of which he was an editor from 1924 to 1940. A prolific author, he wrote more than 50 books. This collection of Morley’s poems contains a number that have not previously appeared in book form. But, many of the verses are reprinted from Songs for a Little House, The Rocking Horse, and Hide and Seek and one piece entitled The Eighth Sin.
