La chimica forense è un settore specializzato che utilizza la chimica per analizzare le prove provenienti dalle scene del crimine per stabilire i fatti nei casi legali. Le aree principali includono la tossicologia, l’analisi delle droghe, degli esplosivi e degli incendi dolosi e l’analisi delle tracce. I chimici forensi studiano e rilevano veleni, droghe e altre tossine in campioni biologici, analizzano droghe sconosciute, determinano la causa di esplosioni e incendi e identificano tracce di sostanze per collegare i sospetti alla scena del crimine. Le tecniche utilizzate includono cromatografia, spettroscopia, microscopia ed elettroforesi. I chimici forensi svolgono un ruolo cruciale nel sistema di giustizia penale, fornendo dati oggettivi che possono confermare la presenza di sostanze illecite, identificare tossine nocive e stabilire collegamenti tra i sospetti e le scene del crimine.
