The Roman philosopher Pliny (AD 23-79) first described iron degradation in Ferrum Corrumpitar, and Robert Boyle later studied its causes in Mechanical Origin of Corrosiveness. Michael Faraday established the quantitative link between chemical reactions and electric currents, forming the basis for calculating corrosion rates. Whitney (1903) provided a framework for electrochemical control, while Schönbein (1836) showed that iron could be passivated by air exposure. Modern understanding of corrosion has been advanced by researchers like Evans, Uhlig, and Fontana. Corrosion laboratories worldwide continue to develop this field as a multidisciplinary science encompassing chemistry, materials science, and engineering
