This book offers an analysis of the role played by art collectors, actors with a growing ability to exert a concrete influence on a significant part of the art world. Collectors’ ability to act as patrons for certain artists, to buy their works, to sell them, and to exhibit them are all actions that have a direct impact on artists’ careers. The more collectors are recognized as authorities capable of legitimizing an artist’s work, the greater their sphere of influence becomes. To fully understand the effects these actions have on the entire art world, we have chosen to study a particular figure who exemplifies the mega-collector: Charles Saatchi.
